Under current Australian Rugby Union rules (ARU), players playing their club rugby outside of the Australian super rugby teams are not eligible to play for the wallabies.

But with 2002 being the last time that Australia held the Bledisloe Cup and only winning three Tri Nations / Rugby Championship titles in the last 19 years, it is time that the ARU reviewed their policy.

New Zealand and England are the other two nations that employ this incentive / sanction and It has worked differently for the three nations in question.

While there are many Kiwis playing in Europe and Japan, New Zealand’s rugby factories have kept producing a seemingly never ending line of world class talent.

England has also seen little effect on their team. Aside from the Armitage brothers, it is hard to think of any other foreign-based English player…
